Beaches are not the best place to swim in Darwin
Although it boasts many pristine and stunning beaches it is actually advised against swimming in the large majority of them for a number of reasons. Like many places in Australia, there can be dangers when entering the water. The biggest danger is most bodies of water are the marine life that may live in there and are known for being unfriendly. Saltwater crocodiles and the deadly Irukandji jellyfish are found in the oceans surrounding Darwin and it is recommended that you do not swim anywhere unless there are stinger nets for your protection against these fearsome creatures!

Mindil beach is known for its stunning sunset market where you can pick up just about anything you need while watching the magical sun set over the sea.
Where should I swim instead of the beach?
There really are dozens of options when it comes to places to swim that are not the beach. The Darwin Waterfront is popular for travellers, as it is a safe and easy way to cool off while staying in the city. There is a man-made lagoon and many activities that you can take part in here at the Darwin Waterfront. The Palmerston Water Park is another option that is also home to theme park like rides and activities to keep you entertained! Don’t forget to head to the iconic Kakadu or Litchfield National Parks where there are an abundance of fresh water streams, lakes, waterfalls and swimming holes to cool off in.
